You make bath time lots of fun.
Rubber
Duckie, I'm awfully fond of you."
AUBURNDALE
| Although they might not admit it, many of the soldiers and Marines now serving in dry Afghanistan grew up hearing Ernie
sing that song on Public Television's Sesame Street.
Jamie Brown of Winter Haven
would be happy if they find themselves humming that tune when they receive her group's latest gift from home, a Bath-in-a-Box,
for which local volunteers are assembling items.
"I want these to go to
the people in the farthest, most desolate outposts, so they can have a little fun and remember folks back home. It's something
a little different and will hopefully put a smile on their faces," said Brown, whose son David is a corporal in the Marine
Corps and is in Afghanistan.
She formed Marine Families of Polk County three
years ago to give support to the families of Marines and other military personnel deployed overseas.
The group has had several projects in the past, but she admits this is the most unique.
"Water over there is so important they can't use it for anything but drinking. They go for weeks
without being able to bathe," she said.
Of course, she can't send them a
shower stall or tub, but she plans to send them the next best thing, a Bath-in-a-Box.
She
is acquiring boxes deep enough and wide enough for some big feet. The box will contain a black yard bag that can be opened
up and then draped over the sides of the box, a gallon jug of water, bath scrubby, a towel and wash cloth.
