The N. Lisa Garcia Veterans Scholarship
1: Type of Scholarship: Academic - An annual Scholarship to be funded monthly by us and any possible donations.
2: Amount and schedule: The scholarship is to be awarded annually (1) for $500.00 and will be funded by private contributions
by our family and any other possible donations from the community.
3: Eligibility Criteria: The
student applying for the scholarship must be;
a: A senior in a Polk County High School;
b: 19 years old or under;
c: The child of a Veteran who is not rated 100% Permanent and
Totally disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veteran DOES NOT have to be disabled but must have an honorable
discharge. The Veteran must be a resident of Polk County Florida.
d: The child must not be eligible
for the Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans and Service members (CSDDV) as defined in Florida Statutes 295.01 and Florida Administrative Code 6A-20.019. A signed letter from the student or parent/guardian will be sufficient proof.
e:
The student must maintain a 2.5 GPA during his/her senior year.
f: The student must have verifiable
100 hours of community service during his/her senior year.
(Child means a person 19 years of age
or younger who is a biological child, adopted child, step child, grandchild, a niece or nephew, a brother or sister of the
veteran or his/her spouse. The child no matter which category must be primarily financially dependent on the veteran for a
means of living while attening any educational institution for a secondary education)
4: Supporting
Documents: The child must provide the following supporting documents;
a: 500 word essay.
b: Copy of student’s school community service log sheet with 100 hours of CS.
c:
Copy of the Veteran’s DD-214 (Discharge) with SSN lined out or illegible.
d: A signed letter
from student or parent/guardian stating they are not eligible for the CSDDV Scholarship.
5: Essay:
Each applicant will provide a 500 typed word essay.
The essay shall be on - (Veterans Issues –
How Veterans helpour communities upon return from Military Service). i.e. Veterans become ... in our community. They also
produce .... in our community. Interview a few Veterans to see what they have done in our communities.
6: Deadline: The scholarship is handled by the Polk Education Foundation. The required documents must be post marked no later than (as required by the PEF), of the graduating year
and sent to the PEF for screening.
7: Awarding of Scholarship: The presentation of the $500.00
N. Lisa Garcia Veterans Scholarship shall be presented by a Veteran at the designated date, time, and location of the award
winner’s school. All efforts will be to present the scholarship at the school’s awards ceremony.
